Question -
we have 3 domains named 'AAA', 'BBB' & 'CCC'. AAA is the primary domain. we have 2 NIC on our main server, 1 has IP address of AAA & the other has 2 IP addresses, i.e 2 ip address on 1 NIC.
BBB & CCC r workgroups for AAA such that everytime a user from BBB & CCC tries to access AAA he will be asked for logon authentication.
the primary IP address given to the 2nd NIC is of BBB.........now when i try browsing my network places I can only view AAA & BBB but i can ping to AAA from BBB & CCC. when i made the ip address of CCC as the primary on the 2nd NIC, i can view AAA & CCC.
users of BBB must see both BBB & AAA
users of CCC must see both CCC & AAA.
from AAA i must view all AAA, BBB & CCC.
how do i configure this on AAA so that I can see
1. AAA, BBB & CCC from AAA
2. AAA & BBB from BBB
3. AAA & CCC from CCC
when i go to 'my network places' - 'entire network'
please advice.
Answer -
The problem is that netbios only runs right on the primary address. What Windows version is on the server? If you have Windows 2000 you can setup DNS and then even if the server doesn't show up in network neiborhood you can still connect to it but going to start -> run then typing \\servername. Also you should be able to ping the computers name from the command prompt. What exactly is the purpose of the 3 different IP ranges?

| Answer provided by admin on 26 Sep 2008 at 04:11 AM What I really want to know is why are there aaa bbb and ccc ip ranges. Why not just have one range with one card? Are there too many users? It would help me if I knew that. As far as DNS goes. I assume DNS is already running if you have Active Directory. The workstations must all be configured to point to that Windows DNS server for proper name resolution. As far as netbios goes I would not worry about it and concentrate on DNS name resolution. Netbios is old and will soon be unsupported. If you need to go that route I can provide some more details but I would just make sure the workstions have the server's IP for the DNS server and that DNS was properly setup on the server. |
