I think the problem is that one of the NIC cards in one PC does not seem to have a valid IP address.
When I try to renew it I get a "file not found" error.
For example:
When I type in "ipconfig" in a cmd window I get:
----------------------------------------
C:\Documents and Settings\Dean>ipconfig /all
Windows IP Configuration
Host Name . . . . . . . . . . . . : BIGBADSILVER
Primary Dns Suffix . . . . . . . :
Node Type . . . . . . . . . . . . : Unknown
IP Routing Enabled. . . . . . . . : No
WINS Proxy Enabled. . . . . . . . : No
Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection 9:
Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :
Description . . . . . . . . . . . : NETGEAR FA311 Fast Ethernet Adapter
#2
Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : 00-A0-CC-79-06-D6
Dhcp Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : Yes
Autoconfiguration Enabled . . . . : Yes
IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 0.0.0.0
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 0.0.0.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . :
DHCP Server . . . . . . . . . . . : 0.0.0.0
---------------------------------------------
Then I tried:
--------------
C:\Documents and Settings\Dean>ipconfig /release
Windows IP Configuration
IP Address for adapter Local Area Connection 9 has already been released.
----------------
Then I tried:
-----------------
C:\Documents and Settings\Dean>ipconfig /renew
Windows IP Configuration
An error occurred while renewing interface Local Area Connection 9 : The system
cannot find the file specified.
------------------
I get a similar file not found error when doing it via the window control panel / network connections.
Do you have any ideas about this "error 2: the system can't find the file specified" please?

| Answer provided by admin on 26 Sep 2008 at 04:11 AM My first question would be do you have a DHCP server. Maybe it is not handing out IP addresses. As far as the "file not found" error that is a new one on me. Are you trying to share an internet connection or are you just trying to get 2 computers to "talk" to eachother? If you just want to network the two computers without internet you might want to remove TCP/IP and just install netbuei. It is a very fast protocol and there is no addressing to set up. If you still want to use tcpip I would manually assign one computer 192.168.4.1 and the other 192.168.4.2. the subnet mask should be 255.255.255.0 and you don't need a gateway. Again this would only be if you are setting up the machines with out internet. |
