Creating a consistant look

I am a 41 year old guy who has done art most of my life. I have a great sense of humor and a lot of ideas and insight that would lend itself to a cartoon medium. I was trained as a fine artist(not a graphic artist) and am toying with the idea of delving into cartooning. Whenever I have tried this in the past the thing I have found most challenging is developing enough of a consistant formula for rendering characters so that they actually look the same throughout the strip, while also maintaining an expresive quality to my work. This has always thwarted me in the past. Can you recommend a book, method, technique to deal with this? Also I am fluent in photoshop and know the basics of illustrator, These days is it an advantage to adapt to creating on computer vs freehand?
Sincerely,
Steve Alexander

| Answer provided by admin on 25 Sep 2008 at 08:35 PM One of the challenges of creating a comic strip is keeping the characters looking consistent from panel to panel. Some creators, such as Scott Kurtz of “PVP” (www.pvponline.com) have created templates of their main characters and trace over these while drawing their comics. This technique yields very consistent results, but it may be somewhat limiting in terms of composition. For example, unless you have a plethora of templates at several different sizes, it will be difficult to zoom in or out on your characters. |
