My son is a senior in high school and enjoys drawing and is very good at it. He keeps saying he wants a career in 'animation', wanting to draw by hand, but I figure that most animation is done by computers. Do you have any advice on this? He will probably be attending a college next year studying general studies, possibly along with some art-related courses.

Well first and formost....ALWAYS encourage the fine motor skills with the pencil. Even the CGA guys (computer generated arts) have to be good with the pen. All ideas are sketched or story-boarded before production. It's an integral process to getting the finances in line.
I have done animations by hand, flip sheet type..then....scan them in to the PC, and let the software fix it up. THere is s/w that can clean it up, crop it up and even fill in some of the gaps. THe first step was with the pen. SO it's hand in hand. Computers and the ability. Get this Bill....your son has got to have MORE tools! In his brain! He needs some business savy for those awesome ideas he's going to come up with. He's gonna know how to interpret the legalese he'll need to protect his interests. EVEN if all he does is work for some company doodlin' all day. HE'll need to learn some marketing perspectives and philosophies because it will ultimately help him relate and be sensitive to the requirements and objectives of his employer. SO...art related courses can mean business courses, marketing courses, english, accounting.....get the idea? I'm preaching a bit here but if you want to know the future and how to make it happen, kids just have to ask there folks and heed the advice. We've been there and hindsight is a sight better than a kids foresight. Right Pop?!
Go gettem!
