Hi, After seeing an advert to transfer video onto vcd/dvd i realised this would come in handy. As a newbie I only want the basics.
I have several family videos on vhs video and would like to transfer them to my pc and then burn them on to CD to create discs (vcd/svcd & eventually dvd) that will play in dvd players. Please could you answer the following Questions?
a)What are the best "basic"programmes to do this
b)What sort of lead do i need to connect video player to PC and roughly what will it cost?
c)How do you create a svcd as opposed to a vcd?

Thanks in anticipation-hope to hear from you soon.....Phil

I seem to get this one alot..I need to keep my answers so I can copy/paste them! LOL

You'll need a video card that has analog video/audio inputs. These tend to be moderately expensive (or at least they used to be). Look for a brand name you know. It may even come w/ its own capture software.

There's alot for software out there that will allow you to capture video into your PC. Most will allow you to edit it as well. I can't recommed the 'best' one for it as everyone has their favorite. I'm not up on the latest and greatest consumer-level software for this. Adobe Premiere is very good as is Pinnacle Studio, Final Cut Pro (Mac only, and there are many others. They all vary in price and features. You basically need to get it to capture the video for you and then let you save it to whatever format you need.

Now, to do the VCD's...I've heard that Roxio Easy CD Creator is good for this tho I've never used it for that purpose. Actually, I've never made a VCD...haven't had a need for them. There used to be alot of compatibility issues w/ VCD's and DVD players so you may have to experiment alot to get it to work.

DVD burners are very affordable now...this may be a better bet that trying to do the VCD thing.

If this wasn't helpful enough, try another expert on this list....Lee Allred. I work w/ him and he may be of more assistance. Tell him I sent you.

There's also alot of info on the net....do a Google search for VCD help and see what you come up with.

Good luck dude!
