keeping dates in order

It sounds like you aren't using a date field type to store the dates. It is probably a text field in which case its doing an ASCII sort so 01 gets sorted before 02, etc. Convert the field to a date field and you should be OK.

To make sure the dates tranfer correctly, I would add a new field then do an Update query setting the newfield to:

DateSerial([oldfield])

Then you can remove the old field.
